SUSTAIN - Fuels that move us forward

SUSTAIN is a pioneering brand focussed on developing responsible and sustainable fuels that contribute towards the push for net zero.

Launched in 2021 by bespoke fuel specialist Coryton, part of the ASPEN Group, SUSTAIN was driven by the company’s mission to create a cleaner future.

Through its SUSTAIN Racing and SUSTAIN Classic collections, the SUSTAIN brand has celebrated some fantastic milestones in the motoring industry and beyond. From the deserts of the Dakar Rally to the waters of Windermere, SUSTAIN has delivered vital greenhouse gas savings across the world and it plans to continue this success long into the future.

Alongside its core ranges, SUSTAIN also supplies bespoke fuel solutions for a variety of wider applications. Designed to be used without any modifications to the engines that use them, each blend is fully mixable with traditional fuels and can be formulated to meet specific requirements.

How does SUSTAIN work?

SUSTAIN products use advanced second-generation biofuel manufactured from agricultural waste, such as straw, by-products or waste from crops which wouldn’t be used for consumption. By doing so, the drop-in fuel utilises the carbon that already exists in our atmosphere, which the plants absorb as they grow, recycling it, rather than releasing additional CO2 that is currently locked underground in fossil fuel.

Who are SUSTAIN Classic and SUSTAIN Racing for?

With an octane number >98 and bio-ethanol content of <1%, SUSTAIN Classic has been technically tailored for classic vehicles, although it can be used on any vehicle which runs on standard forecourt petrol. Originally launched as the UK’s first publicly available sustainable petrol for vintage engines, it has since grown a following amongst motorcyclists, marine enthusiasts and more.

The SUSTAIN Racing range caters for the professional motorsport community. It features a series of advanced racing products, specially designed to meet the performance and sustainability criteria outlined by the FIA.

Myth: Cars do not run well on sustainable fuel, as demonstrated by E10.
Truth: Sustainable fuels perform incredibly well, and this has been proven by one of the most testing industries possible - motorsport.

The motorsport industry has been looking at ways to make itself more environmentally friendly for some time and sustainable fuel is starting to make a real impact. F1 will see all cars run on sustainable fuel by 2026. At Coryton we worked with Prodrive to provide sustainable fuel for the BRX team taking part at Dakar 2022 and 2023, one of the world’s most challenging races. Vehicles fueled by us took podium places in both competitions – proving there doesn’t need to be a drop in performance using sustainable fuels.

We have also been selling SUSTAIN Classic – a range of sustainable fuels aimed mainly at classic cars, but which can be used by any petrol-run vehicle – since Spring 2023. Some of these fuels have less than 1% ethanol in them. Hundreds of cars of all makes and models have used the fuel and reported positive findings

Myth: You get far less mileage from your vehicle when you use ethanol-based sustainable fuels.
Truth: Ethanol is less energy dense than its counterparts, by around a third. That means it has less energy per litre than petrol so you need to use more litres of it to produce the same energy – this shows up as a reduction in miles per gallon. However, at the level ethanol is used in fuel (a maximum of 10% in the UK), this difference is imperceptible to most people. In fact, it translates to a real-life performance reduction of around 1-3%.

It’s also worth noting that there are non-ethanol bio-fuels in production that avoid the use of ethanol altogether. These are created by removing the slightly lower energy components to make fuels that look and perform just like fossil fuels. Our own SUSTAIN Classic contains less than 1% bioethanol, and many users have reported an improvement in fuel efficiency. So, we mustn’t generalize on this matter.

Myth: Not all cars/vehicles can run on sustainable fuel.
Truth: This depends on what sustainable fuel you’re looking at. The Government anticipates that around 95% of petrol-powered vehicles are compatible with E10 fuel. Older and classic cars (and some mopeds) might struggle with the bio-ethanol content of E10. We can’t really go beyond 10% bio-ethanol and 7% bio-diesel content due to compatibility reasons. However, ‘bio’ doesn’t have to mean ethanol or FAME. We could still significantly increase other bio content in our fuels, like we do with SUSTAIN Classic, without having any compatibility issues.

At P&K Thornton Restorations, we have teamed up with Grant Williams Racing to use our experience for further keep the wire wheels turning by tuning and racing our cars on Sustain. All Sustain Racing and Classic products are available to be purchased from our Shop and on Location.
